January 1998 Volume
21, Issue 2 Webmaster's Introduction by M. Wood This months edition of the Draught Notice in now available. This months is even bigger than the original one with the addition of some new columns like the Stewarts report and the History Column. Thanks for everyone getting me your articles by the deadline and helping get the newsletter done early in a very trying month with our club competition only a week or so away. Your assistance has been invaluable. Keep up the good work. For those of you who enjoy reading the newsletter and have written an article in a while, you might consider taking the time to write one. At the moment, the newsletter has increased in distribution of *actual* readers by more than ten fold. What I mean by actual is the number of unique hits that came to our front page and actually read at least 1 article. Get the word our and give back to the brewing community by writing an article. If anybody doubts the reasons for writing for the club newsletter, Id be glad to share with you some of the comments we received thus far. Due to the amount of stuff that's new this January, I've split the section into newsletter items and web page items. Newsletter Stewarts report by John Pyles A quick summary of beers we tasted last time and the one we picked for entering in the Hail to Ales competition. This section is set up as password required. Meeting notes by Lisa Gros Covers BABO business, dues reduction, hail to ales, the AHA conference in Oregon and a few of the upcoming events. This section is set up as password required. Book review A review of "The beer drinkers guide to Munich" by Larry Hawthorne. A quick review of some of the highlights, rough table of contents, etc. I wish I had the book last time I went to Oktoberfest. Brew Quiz A big hit last month, its back with a theme: Beer Styles for those studying BJCP stuff like me. Not as tough as last months test but fun non the less. If you want to write a quiz for a future issue, please contact the webmaster. S.F. Pub Crawl by M Kiesling The plan is in motion, the date set: Saturday Feb 28th @ 11:30am at the Pacific Coast brewery. at least 4 more breweries to hit with 3 more afterwards for those with the stamina. Very informal crawl using mass transit to get along. The Englander Pub by Charlie Webster Not very far from our meeting place is a great little pub to quench your thirst for English ales. Charlie does a very nice review of the pub for those who havent heard about it or couldnt make it after last weeks meeting. Another great reason to attend meetings! Competition Corner by Bryan Gros Keeping you up to date with beers the club is or should be getting ready to enter for competition. Since our own competition looms in the near future, BABO features prominently. This section is set up as password required. How to mount an electric heating element into the boil kettle A little article of how I used a bolt on water heater element to heat my boil kettle and do so without worrying about shorts from splashing wort. It requires a little welding but thats life. Event Calendar A new format instead of just a link to our club calendar. I tried to show some of the events planned and those tentative coming up. Some of the events include a plan to have a Northern California Homebrewers Festival and the AHA conference. If you want to plan ahead, its definitely worth checking out. Gold Rush Breweries by Ken Koupal Our first club history column is in and a great effort it is. Ken Koupal has written a well documented look at the breweries of California from the Gold Rush era. If your a history buff, grab a beer and read this great Story of the breweries of yesteryear. Humor and Jokes This is sort of a light hearted little joke I got from email with the old forward tag. You may have already read it so let me warn you ahead of time. If you hear a good *Beer* joke then send it to me and Ill see if I can use it next month. Thats all there is in the newsletter. And if thats not enough for you . Web site Theres a whole bunch of items that are too numerous to go through in the "whats new" section. Im only going to go over some of the highlights. The first two are new scripts or programs made to facilitate communication between members. The first is a program that tells you if one of the draught board members is online and allows a real time chat interface. It allows for real time communications are requires you to download a "client" program that resides on your system to make it work. The whole things is called the ICQ chat system. If your computer illiterate and dont understand the lingo, email me. The second system is a discussion forum that allows members to post on a bulletin board. It has the ability to display graphics, fonts, colors, email links, web links, table and some other goodies. The idea is that a topic could be created and discussed among members in an asynchronous mode (when you have time and not requiring the people your answering to be online. It causes less traffic than posting via email at least. Another new section is the members only announcements. If you have an announcement that you want to make to the members and want to post it, you can know do so with a reasonable amount of security. The latest club stats are also up and ready for perusal. Ive tried to make a list of the big hit days to give people an idea of what kinds of things are good for promoting the club website and what things detract from getting attention. For those into charts, there a nice 4 month chart in adobe acrobat. January 98 Details ...
