LAST MINUTE MEAD So, you ran out of mead for the holidays. No time to make it. Can I actually buy mead? Yes you can, and Roger St. Denis tells us his experiences with commercial mead sources. LOCAL: Borgetto Winery (Santa Cruz) makes excellent fruit wines and Chaucer's Mead. The Silicon Valley Sudzers rated it best of the commercial meads. Beverages & More has it on the shelf (in the dessert wine section) at comparable wine prices. It can be served "mulled" (warm & spiced); instructions come with the bottle. The meads: King Arthur (dry mead) Really dry, most people did not care for it. A few days later this actually was better, oxidation seemed to help all the Rocky Mountain Meads. Lancelot (medium dry mead) People seemed to enjoy this mead quite a bit. Guinevere (semi-sweet) This one seemed to go over well too. Camelot (sweet) Many people liked this one too. Honey Mead Traditional - which comes in a spectacular Cobalt blue bottle was generally liked by many people. Everyone wanted to take the bottle home. Honey Mead Contemporary Semi Sweet - People liked this one too but not as much as the Rocky Mountain Meads. 375ml bottles $7.99 750ml $13.99 Shipping is extra and I think I included $10 or $15 extra for shipping 3 bottles. The lady (using the term lightly) I spoke to wasn't exactly sweet. Self-degradation, great patience, and a gentle disposition got me through the ordering process on the phone. Be prepared. |
