Celebrating 20 years of
Homebrewing April 1997, Volume

National Homebrew Day
Saturday, May
3, 1997 is National Homebrew Day. A celebration of the
art and science of homebrewing, National Homebrew Day is
declared each year to heighten public awareness and to
pay homage to the fun, traditional hobby of brewing your
own beer.
President
Jimmy Carter legalized homebrewing on a federal level by
signing federal legislation H.R. 1337 in October 1978.
The homebrew
industry has experienced 20 to 35 percent growth each
year for the past five years. In 1993, growth in
homebrew-related sales volume was approximately 25 to 30
percent. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans brew
their own beer.
The American
Homebrewers Association® and the Association of Brewers
are celebrating National Homebrew Day by holding a
company-wide brew, starting in March and tapping on
Saturday, May 4.
The Draught
Board will discuss plans for National Homebrew Day at the
April meeting.
